Director of the Northeast SARE Program

UVM seeks a full-time Director for the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, which is funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Northeast SARE administers seven grant programs, making awards to farmers and other agricultural businesses, researchers, educators, graduate students, and people in organizations and institutions working to improve our food system. We serve the 12 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states (Maine to West Virginia) and Washington, D.C. Our current annual budget is $11 million. See www.northeastsare.org.

The Director is the lead steward of Northeast SARE’s unique role in supporting a network of beneficial relationships in service to farmers and people that work with them. The Director develops and supports communication and collaboration among Northeast SARE staff, the Administrative Council, UVM, NIFA, and agricultural communities with a focus on fulfilling SARE’s mission and implementing our strategic plan for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

This position holds an underlying faculty appointment as a Research Professor, at a rank appropriate to the candidate’s background and experience, reporting to the Associate Director of UVM Extension. The position provides leadership for 10 program and administrative professionals, directly supervising three staff positions. This is a 12-month, 1.0 FTE position, with a robust benefits package. An assignment at 0.80 FTE may be possible to accommodate other academic activities. The position is housed in the South Burlington office of UVM Extension, or another UVM Extension office where space is available. Remote work may be possible, contingent on candidate needs and UVM telework requirements. This position is available on or about January 8, 2024.
