Job Description: 

Reporting to the Project Director--Programs, the BEETs Program Assistant supports the BEETS (Band of Environmentally-Educated and Employable Teens) Program in collaboration with the BEETS Educator & Program Manager. They attend all BEETs sessions and help with classroom management, garden maintenance, and direction. They review and provide feedback on lessons and facilitation guides prepared by the BEETS Educator & Program Manager. They also plan 3-4 social/environmental justice and job readiness lessons a month and 1-2 weekend field trips per year.

The ideal candidate has a demonstrable track record of working effectively with youth of color in low-income communities, experience in youth development programs and passion for food, social and environmental justice. They have a true love for working with people, especially young people, and are excited about supporting their growth and learning. They understand that outdoor-based education is a source of joy and healing. They interrogate and lift up the structural inequities that the communities we work with experience, and work towards creating programs that help support young people to navigate and challenge those injustices. The ideal candidate does not have to have everything listed in this job description, but they are willing and excited to collaborate and learn.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

BEETs Program Implementation, Evaluation, and Supervision:
Support the BEETS Program, including:
Meet regularly with BEETs Educator & Program Manager
Develop and implement environmental justice and job readiness curriculum for BEETS and Leadership Crew members
Co-facilitate lessons and activities with BEETs Educator & Program Manager
Support the BEETs Educator & Program Manager to coordinate guest speakers, field trips, and other special events
Assist in maintaining HR documentation, records and reports, as requested by the Project Director--Operations

Partnership Development and Collaboration
Serve as an effective spokesperson for CG representing the programs’ values to all partners and the general public
Collaborate with the BEETs Program Manager to facilitate and manage the Community Gardeners at Koshland Park

Garden Maintenance
Steward Koshland Community Garden - visit the garden 1-2 times per week and hold responsibility for ongoing garden maintenance and seasonal pruning in collaboration with the Beets Program Manager
Support garden Maintenance days at Koshland
Communicate with CG staff members about any issues/needs
Collaborate with Garden Education team on rotating site workdays

Education & Experience: 

Minimum Qualifications
At least one (1) year of experience participating or facilitating in youth development, garden based education or social justice programming
Strong relationship building skills and ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, community partners, and youth
Significant experience working in multicultural communities of color
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and take initiative
Advocate for environmental justice; knowledge of environmental principles and issues
High School Degree/GED or higher or equivalent experience

Desired Qualifications
At least one (1) year experience teaching or mentoring youth ages 14-19 and working with diverse populations, or equivalent
Experience supervising and managing volunteers/interns
At least one (1) year experience in urban agriculture, gardening, or food and farm education
Strong knowledge of organic gardening practices
Bilingual, or equivalent fluency, in Spanish
Experience living and/or working in the Western Addition
BA or higher or equivalent experience, in relevant fields (environmental studies, science, urban agriculture, sociology, etc.)
Possess a valid CA driver’s license
First Aid and CPR Certification
